Reserve Grade

Balgownie Rangers 9-0 Wests Illawarra

With the re-introduction of compulsory reserve grade teams throughout the Illawarra District Leagues, Bally Rangers Reserve Grade did not know what to expect from Wests Illawarra as they had not fielded a team in reserve grade since 2008.

However, any apprehension the boys may have had quickly evaporated as Bally Rangers were able to dominate the game from start to finish. First half goals from Varda (2), Evo (1) and Dale (1) gave the Rangers a 4-0 half time lead, with fill in Goalkeeper Christian ‘Chich’  Appalonni not been tested at all.

The second half started the same way the first ended with Bally Rangers controlling the game with superior passing, possession and defence ensuring that Wests were never going to get back into the game. The second half produced a further 5 goals (Dale (3), Rompa (2)) resulting in the Rangers mauling Wests 9 – 0. The margin should have been higher, but for the wasteful finishing of veteran midfielder Benny (the author of this match report) who was sent on as a striker for the final 25 minutes.

Given the score line it can sometimes be easy to forget those players who have not got on the score sheet. It should be noted that Travis had a great game controlling the game in central midfield and the defensive trio of Anth, Johnno and Bubs ensured that the team started the season with a clean sheet.

Special mentions should also go to Dale whose four (4) goals resulted in the first individual hat-trick for Bally in the 2011 season, Chich for his great goalkeeping performance and Steve Buckley who, as a result of Freddy’s work commitments, had a significant impact (not really, but we will say he did) as coach.

Youth Grade

Balgownie Rangers 4-1 Wests Illawarra

Balgownie started off its campaign with a comprehensive win over a stubborn Wests outfit at Judy Masters Oval. With so many new additions to the Youth Grade squad, no one would have predicted such a fluent display of passing football.

Bally asserted its dominance early, carving out several quality chances inside 10 minutes. Anthony Vardareff drew a magnificent save out the Wests keeper, who tipped the powerful strike destined for the net on to the crossbar. Wests offside trap frustrated Bally’s frontrunners who were caught offside several times in the first half. The teams entered the break level at 0-0.

The second half saw the boys become more ruthless and clinical in the final third. A terrific burst and cut back from right winger Dan Trevisi set up James Seymour for Bally’s opener.  Substitute Josh Buckley launched a long range strike which nestled in the bottom corner of the goal, to give Bally a deserved 2 goal advantage midway through second half. Wests made it interesting with 20 minutes remaining but goals from Jake Morgan and Joel Osborne snuffed out any hope of a comeback. The boys can be more than happy with the result and will look to back it up against Bellambi next round.

A Special mention to Bally keeper Conor McGoldrick who put his body on the line for the team and Cristian Apolloni who debuted in goal for Conor, who was taken to hospital. A clear illustration of the Balgownie pride and passion. Great work Boys!

First Grade

Balgownie Rangers 2-0 Wests Illawarra

Balgownie picked up were they left off last year in the first round of 2011, defeating the old nemesis Wests Illawarra 2-0. Defending the league and grand final double, The Rangers came out firing early and were rewarded when a smart Rick Metcalfe ball led to Vince Musumeci rolling the ball past the keeper who was left 1-on-1. With pressure mounting form Wests, Bally countered swiftly and were rewarded when Vince Musumeci’s shot was parried into the path of an oncoming Josh Faulks to tap in for 2-0. Balgownie would go on to have several chances through Rick Metcalfe, substitute Daniel Vardareff and an Aaron Davis freekick but the final score ended up 2-0. Strong performances by Frank Timpano and Pablo Neira in the centre of the park as well as a towering game for centre back’s Matthew Clark and Brent Wilson. Bring on the Rosellas!
