1925 NSW Vs England Association Football Match

Depicted below is the NSW team that lost to England 3-2 in front of 45,000 fans at the Sydney Agricultural Grounds on the 30th May 1925. Balgownie Ranger’s James “Judy” Masters (holding the ball far right) scored the second goal in this game and captained the NSW team. Added to this the Ranger’s Tom “Titchy” Thompson (second from the left) played in this game as well. Further below is the 1925 English team that toured Australia that year and played against NSW. And in finding these pictures from The Sydney Mail, I found (and have displayed) two further pictures of the 1885 and 1883 NSW teams.

Youth Grade Grand Final

28 September, 2011

Crehan Park, Cringila

The Rangers came into there rescheduled Grand Final missing the suspended Josh Buckley. Only two changes were made to the squad that dominated Thirroul the previous week with Josh Mitchell making way for a resurgent Brent McIntosh on the left wing and JB being replaced by the talismanic Daniel Vardareff. The boys had the best of the opening exchanges, setting up camp in the Woonona half and getting a few shots away. Woonona started to threaten with there sharp counter attacking and neat flick passes, resulting in a corner. As the corner was whipped in, somehow Luke Mittwollen was found unmarked at the back post and headed home easily to give Woonona a 1-0 lead after 10 minutes. Things would go from bad to worse for the young Rangers when a communication lapse lead to Mitwollen heading home again for the Sharkies just after the 20 minute mark.

The Bally lads were wounded but not about to give up as neat build up play lead to Ryan Trevor finding Jordan Hughes darting run into the box before squaring up for Daniel Vardareff to slide home. A great ball in from Damien Masi 3 minutes later found a great glancing header from Vardareff again which was smartly tipped by the Sharkies keeper. More neat play around the edge of the area lead to another headed chance for Vardareff who beat the keeper this time but also skipped over the bar by millimetres. 2-1 it remained going into the half time break.

A lively start to the second half from the Rangers had the Woonona boys reeling with Masi and workman Jake Morgan both testing the keeper from distance. Seymour and Mitchell both entered the game to try and inject some spark into the front-line after Vardareffs demise. Luke Buckleys industrial efforts in the centre of the park would start off a move which ended with Seymour flicking the ball to the back post for Jordan Hughes to nod home tieing the scores up. Unfortunately, Hughes had already received a yellow card and received another for excessive celebration, leaving the Rangers down to 10 men. The backline on Masi, Apolloni, Trevor and Trevisi kept the lacklustre Woonona attacks at bay until the full time whistle.

The Rangers continued there domination through the two ten minute extra time periods and carried the game over into penalty shoot out. Both teams sunk there first 3 penalties with Seymour, Mitchell and McIntosh all reamining cool at the spot for Balgownie. Jordan Everson skied his penalty high but it was redeemed by a wonderful Conor McGoldrick stop. Apolloni cooly knocked down his penalty before the final penalty was once again saved by McGoldrick triggering wild celebrations on the field by the Bally community.

Man of the match for the game was the industrious Jake Morgan. Great season lads, congrats on the double!
