Division One – Round 9 vs Bellambi

Division One (Reserve Grade)
Balgownie Rangers  2 (2) – (0) 0 Bellambi
J. Zakara (18m), D. Schmid 1 (34m)

On a slightly wet track, Bally welcomed Bellambi to Judy Masters Oval for this round 9 Division One clash.

Bally started the game well with some good periods of possession and were rarely troubled at the back. Bally’s first goal came from some great attacking play down the right and Dale Schmid found himself with a great opportunity to score but unselfishly squared to Zac with an even easier opportunity and he made no mistake from 6 yards. 15 minutes later, Dale got himself on the scoresheet for the 3rd week in a row after a determined effort to get into the box, slotting in from 12 yards.

Bally had a few more chances to kill the game off, however the Bellambi ‘keeper made a few decent saves mid-way through the second stanza. The second half remained scoreless, with Bellambi only having one decent shot on goal right at the end.

BRFC 1 (0) Vs. Wests Illawarra 0 (0)

Goal: Joshua Faulks

Battles between Bally and Wests always have extra spice than most matches and this was no exception with both sides finishing with 10 men and the Rangers prevailing 1-0.

Bally started the match on the front foot and the midfield of Jezza and Smedey were controlling proceedings from the offing. A few half chances went by before Josh volleyed just over from close range and Doz went close from the edge of the box. Al Costabile was a constant menace down the right and seemed to go past his man at will during the first half and it took a spectacular save to deny him the opening goal after another brilliant run. The back trio of Azza, Dale and Clarkey were giving little away and Toddy rarely looked troubled but the game was still in the balance at the break at 0-0.

Chances for both sides were harder to come by at the start of the second half and the tension between the sides rose further after an off the ball incident saw Rick Metcalf and his opposite number booked. Ricky then produced a moment of magic, cutting in from the left and producing a stinging shot which the keeper could only parry and like any good striker Josh was there to tap it in to an empty net for 1-0. Wests went down to 10 men soon after and Smedey once again took over in the middle, retaining possession for the Rangers and restricting the visitors to long range shots. The game took another turn when Ricky was sent off after a second yellow for a late challenge but the Rangers looked intent on keeping top spot and closed down any threat from Wests, with everyone working hard from back to front. Doz bought out a smart save at the near post after leaving 2 defenders behind and had another shot saved after more good work from Al, then Josh saw a lob over the keeper sail just wide but in the end it was a much deserved clean sheet for Toddy and a well earned 3 points for Bally.

BRFC 3 (2) Vs. Wests Illawarra 0 (0)

Goals: Josh Buckley, Jordan Everson & Daniel Vardareff

Balgownie continued there dominance in the league as they claimed outright second and edged to within 4 points of Kiama. Wests Illawarra were the next team to face the wrath of the Rangers, being totally outclassed and outplayed all over the pitch. Balgownie’s masterful attacking ranks were on show creating and putting away chances. Bally proved there dominance through prolific hitman Daniel Vardareff who powered a volley into the net after a superb Luke Buckley cross to take his tally to 9 for the season. His strike partner Jordan Everson was also on the score sheet for the first time since round 5 after he headed in from Luke Buckley’s corner. Bally cruised into half time with a 2-0 lead. A strong performance defensively in the second half kept Chris Dunning’s sheet clean for the third occasion this season after Josh Buckley rounded off the scoring with a well taken penalty. Balgownie continued their winning ways. Today’s opponents Bellambi will be more of a test but the boys should be up to the challenge.

Even though we have been hit with plenty of injuries lately the teams attitude and commitment has remained positive. It is a difficult time at the moment and may be for a few more weeks but I do feel we will get through it ok. The players that have remained fit are working extremely hard on and off the field and the others are extremely keen to get back as soon as possible.

This match against South Coast United we had just a bare 11 again. Our aim was to get in early and get some goals and have a lead by halftime. The team played very well and knocked the ball around nicely. This opened up a lot of space for our wide players and also there seemed to be a lot of space in the middle of the park to utilise. Our central midfielders had time to go at the opposition defence and Amy Oliver opened the scoring with a super long range effort. Our second goal was also started by our midfielders who used the width and the play finished off with a first time shot by Melissa. At the break we were up 2 nil and in a good position.

We lost Melissa early in the second half as she had to go to work but that didn’t seem to bother us at all. We continued to knock the ball around and play to each others feet and this was great to watch. It didn’t even look like we were playing with a player short. Amy Oliver got her second for the day with a great header from a Dayna corner, Josephine found the back of the net from the most acute angles and Dayna got on the score sheet with a cracker of a free kick from outside the 18 yard box.

5 nil the fulltime score and it was a perfect ending to a day where we also wore new club jerseys thanks to Dayna and MMJ Real Estate.

Thanks for the effort and keep up the great work as we continue to piece together our puzzle.

Coach Umberto

Division One – Round 8 vs Dapto

Posted by rappleby | Fixtures,Reserve Grade,Results | Saturday 22 May 2010 7:48 pm

Division One (Reserve Grade)
Balgownie Rangers  1 (1) – (0) 0 Dapto
D. Schmid 1

With captain Alan Appleby out for this game – assisting with the birth of his first son, things had to be re-shuffled around for the defending champions. Brent came into the sweeper role, while Richard Astone came back into the team up front.

Bally started the game well, however, running into the wind saw most of the ball in their own half and it showed with Dapto having half a dozen free kicks just outside the box early on in the game. All attempts were either saved by Apples Snr in goal or the wall did enough to deflect/frighten the Dapto strikers attempts.

Bally were awarded a penalty mid-way through the half, however Paul Cicero’s attempt was weak and although the ‘keeper was sent the wrong way, Cich’s stab floated over the crossbar. Dale notched up another goal to his slowly increasing tally, after some great team play saw him slot in from close range to give Bally a 1 goal advantage going into the break. Dapto were reduced to 10 men before half-time which would give Bally extra confidence for the second half.

Due to the wind and Dapto’s reduced team, the remainder of the game was almost exclusively played in Dapto’s end of the ground. Bally peppered the Dapto goal with shots, but the final touch was just not there for Bally today. 3 points were taken, however Bally really should have buried this team with half a dozen goals.
