We approached this game with a much improved attitude and the vibe that the players generated on the day was tremendous. I would have liked to have had this same attitude leading into this semi final but we finished the year in 3rd place on the table and that’s an improvement on last year and a great result.
The first half was fantastic and close to a perfect half of football. We did all the things we needed to do right and we did them with a great level of intensity. We defended close and hard and gave nothing away. Our midfield worked hard and we sent the ball out wide on numerous occasions, especially the right where Amy.W worked overtime up and down that right flank and got the ball into the penalty area where chances were created. We got the well deserved goal that we pushed so hard for through Dayna and went into the half time break 1 nil up.

We tried to continue with the same intensity in the 2nd half but it was going to be tough as we set such a high level and with only one substitute. A minor lapse in concentration may have lead to Fernhill’s goal but it was well taken by the Fernhill striker. We battled on and kept fighting to the end. As the game progressed is was always going to be a mistake that was going to be the fate of either team.
Our defence got stronger and stronger and our whole backline stepped it up a few gears and showed me a side of them I had never seen before. I always knew in was in them and after conceding they were not going to let another one past them.

We were unlucky not to grab a winner towards the end of normal time as well as extra time and the game had to be decided on penalties. Lynette did her best to save 2 penalties and keep us in it but unfortunately we missed 3. It was déjà vu, another season bowing out in the semi final by penalties which is disappointing.

Id like to thank all the girls for the effort they put in on the day and throughout the year. I saw a level of football in some girls in particular that I had never seen before. It goes to show that everyone has it in them to become a better player and move forward to another level when you put your mind to it and have the right attitude. Well done.

As for me, I again have learnt so much, was able to continue friendships and have made new ones in a short amount of time.

Goal(s): Glen Dorrian 2 and Matt Clark

CHAMPIONS!!!!  Bally were at home in Round 20 to Kemblawarra and wrapped up the league title with a 3-1 win.

After a tough game last week The Rangers were forced to wait another week for the trophy but Kemblawarra were never going to give the boys an easy game. Both sides had some half chances in the opening stages but a neat through ball and smart finish saw Bally trail  1-0 after 15 minutes. But as is typical from The Rangers this season a fight back was on the cards and 2 lovely corners from Rick saw 2 headers hit the net, one from Doz and the other from Clarkey. Bally were on the front foot till the end of the half but no goals were had, although Rick had a free kick tipped over the bar.

The start of the second half has been a problem for Bally in recent weeks, so Stewy stressed the need for the boys to switch on straight away and his words were echoed within minutes as Toddy produced a brilliant stop to deny Kemblawarra an equaliser. Dale took a knock and looked a bit ginger for a while but there were chances to put the game out of reach and when Doz got the ball on the sideline he left his man for dead and buried it past the keeper for 3-1 and the boys had one hand on the trophy. Doz was replaced by Rich Astone after a calf injury pulled him up and for the last 10 minutes the boys finished off the job, with the front 3 still looking like grabbing another. But 3-1 it stayed and Balgownie were deservedly crowned 2010 League Champions!!!!

BRFC Results 14th August 2010

Division One
Balgownie Rangers  2 (2) – (0) 0 Dapto at Dapto Showground

Z’s really dominated this game but It did not show on the score sheet. Dapto started the game with 10 men and Bally really should have taken advantage but didn’t score until the 30 minutes mark when Smiles was on hand to bundle the ball in after a plethora of shots and swings of legs in the goalmouth. Shortly after Dale Schmid nearly broke the net after belting one in the top corner from about 15 yards out.

It looked like Bally would go on with it, however a scoreless second half kept the game at 2-0 to the Rangers. Benny C probably had the best chance after missing an open goal from 5cms out – although the 15 strong crowd say he was actually on the line when he delicately placed the ball into the upright – Rich Astone smashing the rebound into the crossbar.

Disappointing not to score more goals – probably 10 or so would have been a better reflection of the game.

Goal(s): Daniel Lewis and Dale Schmid

BRFC Results 15th August 2010

First Grade
Balgownie Rangers  1 (1) – (0) 1 Highlands United at Judy Masters Oval

Round 19 saw Highlands make the trip to Judy Masters Oval after a switch of grounds and the spoils were shared 1-1.

In what was an entertaining encounter, the visitors got off to a bright start with a couple of shots from distance and The Rangers quickly knew they were in a real match after the previous weeks debacle. The back 3 and Toddy had plenty of work to do containing the sharp forwards from Highlands, but to be fair they handled it very well and bit by bit Josh, Rick and Doz were starting to threaten. Doz hit a shot off target and Rick was making his usual mazy runs but when Jezza shrugged off his man in midfield and played a dangerous dink to Josh there was only going to be one outcome and 1-0 to Bally it was. Doz had a header flash wide bit it stayed that score till the break.

Within 1 minute of the restart Highlands had equalised, with a somewhat fortunate finish as Toddy seemed to have done enough to stop it. Bally could have easily dropped their bundle but with a victory needed to wrap up the League Championship the boys took it to the Highlanders with constant pressure and only some bad luck and some poor refereeing decisions cost The Rangers a goal. Blake seemed to have found another 3 gears down the right and Josh had a couple of chances but to be honest both sides gave as good as each other and a draw was probably a fair result.

The league title will be wrapped up next week with a win, but with Kemblawarra in fine goalscoring form The Rangers will have their work cut out. Go Bally!!!!

Goal(s): Josh Faulks

Youth Grade
Balgownie Rangers  1 (0) – (0) 2 Highlands United at Judy Masters Oval

Bally stumbled yet again on route to the finals, falling to Highlands 2-1 at home on Saturday. In an even first 45 minutes, no goals were scored and there was hardly any action at either end. The second half got off to a flier though when Chris Dunning brought down a Highlands player in the area and paid the price for doing so, losing his clean sheet via a penalty. Highlands doubled there lead when a poor clearance and sloppy defending aloud the striker an open look at goal for 2-1. Jed Waters pulled one back for the Rangers with a well place effort. Bally could have stole the game late on with chances from Josh Buckley and Daniel Vardareff but they were denied by some wonderful saves. 2-1 it finished, with some food for thought left for the silver fox and his troops

Goal(s): Jed Waters

Division One
Balgownie Rangers  2 (2) – (1) 1 University at Koolobong Oval

A double-header saw a few weary legs make it Koolabong Oval for the washed out round 17 fixture against Uni. Bally started well and enjoyed a lot of possession with Brent Wilson and Jason Zakara both getting goals in the first half. Plenty of opportunities in the first half, but as the day before, we didn’t seem to take advantage of the field position and time with the ball. A lapse at the back allowed Uni to score just before half time.
The second half, saw Uni come at us a little more and were sniffing around for a goal, however some desperate defending kept them at bay. 10 minutes from the end a sniper seemed cut down Apples Snr in goals after a routine punt down field – he actually tore a hip flexor and will be sidelined for a couple of weeks. Brent took over in goals and got a finger to a cross to stop a certain Uni equalizer. Bally ended up 2-1 winners and now move into 3rd spot on the ladder.

Goal(s): Brent Wilson and Jason Zakara

Women’s 1st Division
Balgownie Rangers  2 (1) – (0) 2 Helensburgh at Rex Jackson Oval

Goal(s): Dayna & Cath
