Division One
Balgownie Rangers 2 (2) – (0) 0 Dapto at Dapto Showground
Z’s really dominated this game but It did not show on the score sheet. Dapto started the game with 10 men and Bally really should have taken advantage but didn’t score until the 30 minutes mark when Smiles was on hand to bundle the ball in after a plethora of shots and swings of legs in the goalmouth. Shortly after Dale Schmid nearly broke the net after belting one in the top corner from about 15 yards out.
It looked like Bally would go on with it, however a scoreless second half kept the game at 2-0 to the Rangers. Benny C probably had the best chance after missing an open goal from 5cms out – although the 15 strong crowd say he was actually on the line when he delicately placed the ball into the upright – Rich Astone smashing the rebound into the crossbar.
Disappointing not to score more goals – probably 10 or so would have been a better reflection of the game.
Goal(s): Daniel Lewis and Dale Schmid

Balgownie Rangers 1 (1) – (0) 1 Highlands United at Judy Masters Oval
Round 19 saw Highlands make the trip to Judy Masters Oval after a switch of grounds and the spoils were shared 1-1.
In what was an entertaining encounter, the visitors got off to a bright start with a couple of shots from distance and The Rangers quickly knew they were in a real match after the previous weeks debacle. The back 3 and Toddy had plenty of work to do containing the sharp forwards from Highlands, but to be fair they handled it very well and bit by bit Josh, Rick and Doz were starting to threaten. Doz hit a shot off target and Rick was making his usual mazy runs but when Jezza shrugged off his man in midfield and played a dangerous dink to Josh there was only going to be one outcome and 1-0 to Bally it was. Doz had a header flash wide bit it stayed that score till the break.
Within 1 minute of the restart Highlands had equalised, with a somewhat fortunate finish as Toddy seemed to have done enough to stop it. Bally could have easily dropped their bundle but with a victory needed to wrap up the League Championship the boys took it to the Highlanders with constant pressure and only some bad luck and some poor refereeing decisions cost The Rangers a goal. Blake seemed to have found another 3 gears down the right and Josh had a couple of chances but to be honest both sides gave as good as each other and a draw was probably a fair result.
The league title will be wrapped up next week with a win, but with Kemblawarra in fine goalscoring form The Rangers will have their work cut out. Go Bally!!!!

Balgownie Rangers 1 (0) – (0) 2 Highlands United at Judy Masters Oval
Bally stumbled yet again on route to the finals, falling to Highlands 2-1 at home on Saturday. In an even first 45 minutes, no goals were scored and there was hardly any action at either end. The second half got off to a flier though when Chris Dunning brought down a Highlands player in the area and paid the price for doing so, losing his clean sheet via a penalty. Highlands doubled there lead when a poor clearance and sloppy defending aloud the striker an open look at goal for 2-1. Jed Waters pulled one back for the Rangers with a well place effort. Bally could have stole the game late on with chances from Josh Buckley and Daniel Vardareff but they were denied by some wonderful saves. 2-1 it finished, with some food for thought left for the silver fox and his troops

Balgownie Rangers 2 (2) – (1) 1 University at Koolobong Oval
A double-header saw a few weary legs make it Koolabong Oval for the washed out round 17 fixture against Uni. Bally started well and enjoyed a lot of possession with Brent Wilson and Jason Zakara both getting goals in the first half. Plenty of opportunities in the first half, but as the day before, we didn’t seem to take advantage of the field position and time with the ball. A lapse at the back allowed Uni to score just before half time.
The second half, saw Uni come at us a little more and were sniffing around for a goal, however some desperate defending kept them at bay. 10 minutes from the end a sniper seemed cut down Apples Snr in goals after a routine punt down field – he actually tore a hip flexor and will be sidelined for a couple of weeks. Brent took over in goals and got a finger to a cross to stop a certain Uni equalizer. Bally ended up 2-1 winners and now move into 3rd spot on the ladder.

Bally took the long trip away to 2nd place Kiama and made giant strides towards the league championship with a convincing 2-0 victory.
In the top of the table clash with massive rewards for the victors The Rangers were by far the better side from the outset with all of the boys on song. Northy was all over his man, Blake was keeping their left back on the defensive, Rick, Josh and Doz were threatening at every opportunity, Smedey and Jezza were way too strong and Toddy didn’t have a save to make for 25 mins thanks to Dale, Clarkey and Azza. Doz nearly scored a spectacular diving header from a lovely ball from Josh, Some lovely lead up play saw Rick play in Northy who shot just wide but no goals for either side at half time.
Bally came out firing in the second half, with Rick once again looming as the game breaker. A spell of pressure from Kiama saw Toddy make some crucial stops, one in particular was a peach. Josh was released down the right and played in Doz, but he was thwarted with a lucky save from their keeper and the tension built even further. Blake was replaced by Traka after a typically energetic game and it was the El Presidente who made the difference with a strong run and pass for his brother Josh, who turned and slotted home with his left foot. Josh then proceeded to run 85 meters to celebrate, and The Rangers had to wait for him to get back to halfway to congratulate him on his 19th goal of the year. Traka then laid on another for Rick who finished from the edge of the box for 2-0. Bally shut up shop from then on and fully deserved the win, with a 7 point lead at the top as their reward. Go The Rangers!!!!

Kiama have been a thorn in the side of the youth grade boys all year. Having been dueling for first and second in the first few rounds, they met at Judy Masters only to have Kiama come out with 3 overage players to beat Bally 2-0. This time, the boys seemed a lot more hungry for the match which would all but decide the minor premiership. Balgownie were boosted by the first start in 3 weeks by Andrew Milne and the naming of league leading scorer Daniel Vardareff on the bench. The boys went out hard and had a fantastic early chance with Jed Waters denied a 1-on-1 by a reaching Kiama keeper. Jed got his revenge 5 minutes later, pumping a rebound into the top corner of the Kiama net to give the 2nd placed Rangers the lead. Kiama hit back immediately when one of the Kiama strikers latched onto a through ball and scored (with the Balgownie defence thinking the Kiama player was offside). Bally were punished for their inability to play the whistle. 1-1 at half time.
Bally were under the pump early in the second half and it was only made worse when a penalty call was made in favour of Kiama by the referee after Andrew Milne looked to take ball then player outside the Balgownie area. The referee awarded a foul and a penalty to the Quarriers who netted past a stagnant Chris Dunning to lead 2-1. Bally were getting desperate and lacking energy and creativity, blazing chances high and wide. Luke McDonald was put on to spark Bally and after that the returning Daniel Vardareff was injected for the final 10 minutes where Bally should have done better with 3 short range free kicks which ultimately resulted in Kiama scoring their 3rd and Colin Studman completing his hat-trick. An unlucky result for the boys who are going to have to win pretty much every game to have any chance at the minor premiership. On a high note, with a 17 point gap from 5th and 5 games remaining, Balgownie have sealed a finals birth for the second year in a row. Good luck boys.

This was a tough battle between 2 of the top teams in the league. Neither team gave an inch and if you wanted to gain an inch you had to fight damn hard to get it. It was a physical encounter, at times messy football but it couldn’t be helped. I commend all the girls for their tremendous effort especially backing up from last week.
This is exactly what I can be proud of from my team. A team that goes out and puts 120% effort for the whole game. A team that helps their teammates when needed. When we look down and tired teammates are their to help you find something extra. Win lose or draw you walk off that pitch knowing you gave it all, your teammates gave everything they had and you can all be proud of yourselves.
The last 2 weeks will play an important part in our finals campaign. We have a bye next and then 2 more matches before the first semi final. Cant wait.
Outstanding effort to all. Thank you.
